An early morning drive to Doncaster’s Holiday Inn for the 10.30 start of the annual general meeting of Polypipe, the UK’s largest manufacturer of plastic piping systems, was another reminder of how useful these occasions can be for investors even when there is no formal presentation and hardly any other shareholders turn up. The AGM gave a chance to check out Polypipe’s new management team led by Martin Payne, who took over as chief executive last October, and Paul James, the new finance director, who arrived in March. An added bonus was an impromptu visit round one of Polypipe’s two Doncaster plants which churn out millions of plumbing connections 24 hours a day, five days a week.
