National Grid (NG.) AGM 2014

I attended the Annual General Meeting of National Grid Plc on the 28th July, at the ICC in Birmingham. A few shareholders complained about the 11.30 start time (it transpired that they held it in the afternoon previously), but I can't say that it was of concern to me. However finding somewhere to park near the venue was not easy (poorly signposted) and road closures in central Birmingham did not help. I would estimate 200 to 300 shareholders attended, and they generally seemed happy ‐ I ...

Halfords Group plc (HFD) AGM 2014

Today I attended the 10th Annual General Meeting of Halfords Group plc at the Hilton Garden Inn, Birmingham. The hotel was a pleasant enough location but marred by both the St Chad's and Queensway tunnels in central Birmingham being closed, thus making the journey by car a bit of a pain to say the least (the last 2 miles took over 30 minutes). With 15 shareholders present we opened with the Chairman, Dennis Millard, giving a statement outlining the results in the ...

Bloomsbury Publishing (BMY) AGM report 2014

Bloomsbury Publishing (BMY) has been on my watchlist for a while. So I attended the company’s AGM on June 22 as a guest, to try and get a feel whether the £129m market cap company really is an undervalued jewel as the share tipsters on the Investors Chronicle and Daily Telegraph regularly imply. The company, founded in 1986, by Nigel Newton, 59, its long-serving chief executive, made its name and fortune, by discovering JK Rowling’s Harry Potter children’s book series. The story ...

Paypoint (PAY) AGM Report 2014

I attended the Annual General Meeting of Paypoint on the 23rd July in the City. There were 4 or 5 ordinary shareholders present - that's more than last year when I was the only one. Paypoint operates electronic payment systems. That means terminals in shops to pay utility bills or do phone top-ups (the latter being a declining market), plus acts as an on-line "payment processor" for credit/debit card payments, provides mobile phone payment facilities for parking operators (e.g. local authorities), ...

TR Property Investment Trust PLC (TRY) AGM 2014.

This investment trust held its 110th Annual General Meeting today (22/7/2014) at the Royal Automobile Club, London. The Trust maintains a portfolio in shares of property companies of all sizes on an international basis and also in direct investment property, located within the UK (mostly London and the Southeast). The results this year were as follows, revenue up 20%, NAV up 18.4% (the share price discount to NAV is now only in the region of 3%, down from 20% a few years ...

ProVen VCT (PVN) AGM Report 2014

I attended the Annual General Meeting of ProVen VCT today (22/7/2014). This is of course a Venture Capital Trust and one of the longest established and better performing ones. Total return of 5.8% per annum since launch according to Allenbridge, which is the best measure of VCT performance. You also get tax free dividends of course. The fund is managed by Beringea. There were about 5 ordinary shareholders present in a club north of Covent Garden, but it was a hot day ...

Blinkx (RTHM) AGM Report 2014 ‐ Was it a black swan event?

Blinkx held their AGM in London today, starting at 9.00 am. The timing apparently got some complaints but their AGMs do tend to last for three hours. I suggested after the meeting closed that they might want to move it to a 2.00 pm start time if they want to continue to hold them in London. There were about 40 shareholders present ‐ probably more than last year. But that is probably down to the recent events at Blinkx ‐ the Edelman blog, the attack ...

JPMorgan European Smaller Companies Trust (JESC) AGM Report 2014

Are investment trusts boring vehicles that investors who want to "buy and forget" invest in, but where you might expect performance to be somewhat pedestrian? Well consider the performance of the above mentioned company last year. Total return was 43.6% to the year ending in March which most investors would find difficulty in beating. Of course small cap stocks were a favourite of investors last year and the European economies and their associated markets recovered. The company did not have as ...

Amati VCT 2 PLC (AMAT) AGM Report 2014

Amati VCT 2 Plc is a Venture Capital Trust that was formed in March 2011 from the merger with Invesco Perpetual AIM VCT Plc. It had previously been the result of a merger of the Singer & Friedlander AIM VCTs, subsequently renamed Victory VCT and then Amati after the latter took over the fund management. I attended the Annual General Meeting of the company yesterday (26th June 2014) at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London at 10.00am. Amati had ...

Globo (GBO) AGM Report 2014

Globo held their Annual General Meeting in the City of London on the 19th June 2014. To give you some background on the company, Globo has been listed on AIM for some years. It has two main product streams - CitronGO! and GO!Social that provide services to feature phone users (45% of revenue) and GO!Enterprise and related products that support mobile applications (particularly the BYOD - Bring Your Own Device) concept (55% of revenue). The latter is the more rapidly growing ...
